Characteristics & what to look for

Tooth root exposure is also known as gumline recession. You may notice that the root of the tooth is slightly more yellow then the rest of your tooth or that the tooth with the exposed root appears longer than your other teeth. Pain or sensitivity in the area is also a common characteristic of an exposed root. You may experience discomfort when consuming hot or cold liquids. Exposed tooth roots are often more sensitive to hot, cold, sweet, or acidic foods and drinks. You may experience discomfort or sharp pain when consuming these substances, particularly near the exposed area.

Similar and related symptoms

Not all teeth with recession are sensitive and not all tooth sensitivity is related to recession. Tooth sensitivity can be caused by other factors including cavities.

What you can do at home to help ease symptoms

It is common to avoid areas of recession because they can be tender when brushing, but it is important to keep these areas clean and plaque free. Allowing plaque to build up at the site of recession can make the gum tissue more tender and make the recession worse. To help ease the symptoms of gum recession, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and light pressure during brushing.
